I attended and thoroughly enjoyed a Joe Abercrombie appearance in Leeds last Tuesday. He's a great guy – funny, talented, yet under the humour the odd endearing hint that in spite of great success he has a humble or vulnerable side.

For me BTAH is the strongest book in the trilogy, but Joe's work has got better and better and better since then. Best Served Cold may be a little dark for some (it was for my wife, for example), but I loved it. And The Heroes is a masterpiece – funny, intense, and without trying to preach it tells the painful truth about the futility of war.

For me Joe's distinctive voice is one of most exciting things in today's fantasy. For example, the way he has his characters supply an ironic (hilarious) commentary on events, and the way he wrong-foots the reader with a monologue response that reads like it could've been dialogue.
